Jerry Bernard Obituary

Jerry Dean Bernard, 76, of Bonnie passed away Saturday evening, June 20, 2020 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Centralia. He was born in Jefferson County, Illinois on December 27, 1943, to the late Paul and Erma Lee (Wangler) Bernard. He married Phylis (Bean) Bernard on August 28, 1965 in Mt. Vernon. They were blessed with 54 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on November 13, 2019.
Mr. Bernard worked at M. Bernard & Sons Grain Elevator for many years.
Mr. Bernard is survived by his sons, Carl Bernard and wife Jenē of Acworth, Georgia, Jody Bernard of Mt. Vernon, Barry Bernard of Mt. Vernon and Reginald Bernard of Bonnie; daughters, Cindy Walsh and husband Shawn of Canton, Georgia and Windy Howard and husband Sam of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Patrick, Jacob, Colton, Connor, Jackie, Jovey and Michael; brother Larry Dale Bernard and wife Tana of Virginia; brother-in-law Phil Bean and wife Shelby of Texico, Illinois, sister-in-law, Marsha Jones of Sesser, sister-in-law Sue Bean of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Dean was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Lee Bernard, brother-in-law George Jones, brother-in-law Martin Bean, sister-in-law Gay Bernard and nephew Chris Jones.
Everyone knew him as “Dean” and he loved gardening and growing exotic colored vegetables, especially purple carrots and sweet potatoes.  He loved kids, always gravitating to hold new babies.  Dean was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
A Private family Visitation will be held.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 25th in the Smith Cemetery in Belle Rive with Bro. Jimmie Fitzjerrells officiating.
Because of his equal love of growing food and giving it away, memorials may be made to the FFA or His Hands Food Pantry.
