John Mark Bumpus

John Mark Bumpus passed from this life to be with his Heavenly Father on September 18, 2021.  He passed away at his home in Benton, Illinois.  John was born February 7, 1957, in Carmi, Illinois to (Lois) Kathleen (Presley) and Lloyd Bumpus.  He was the grandson of Clarence and Irene Presley, and Ernest Bumpus and Mattie Bumpus.

He is survived by his mother Kathleen, brothers Lyle and Stan (Mary), and nephews Ryan, Jake (Jessica), Shawn, David (Kayla), Daniel, Steven, and great-nephew Jonathan.  He was preceded in death by his father Lloyd and half-brother David Edward Bumpus.  He graduated from Edwards County High School in 1975, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana University, and an MBA from SIUC.  He worked at Mount Vernon Neon Sign Company for many years.

He was a devoted son who sacrificed his personal interest to serve and care for his parents, including visiting his mother every day for years.  He was a loyal brother, nephew, cousin, and friend to many.  He was a doting uncle who was very proud of all of his successful nephews and the men they have become.  He was a faithful and active member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.  He enjoyed gardening and riding his motorcycle as a member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA).  He had previously served as an officer of Bonnie Holiness Camp.  He was hard-working, patriotic, honest, kind, and considerate, especially to the elderly, sick, and less fortunate.  He was taken from this life by COVID.  The family understands that there are many people who cared deeply for John and would like to pay their last respects, and for that we are very thankful; however, in an effort to prevent heartache and loss for other families due to COVID, the services will be private and limited to immediate family only.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
