Jonathan David Settle (“Dave” or “Shug” to his friends and family) passed away peacefully on June 7th in Annapolis, MD from Multiple Myeloma. His wife Bonnie (Beardsmore) Settle and daughter Dr. Kathleen Settle-LaDonna were by his side when he passed.
Dave was born on October 22, 1946, in Ina, Illinois. The son of Ray Settle and Helen (Newlin) Settle and the younger brother of Lloyd Settle of Ina, Illinois.
Dave graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1964, was a proud Ram, and frequently attended his high school class reunions.
After high school, he attended Murray State University and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the United States Navy Officer Candidate School and served his country proudly from 1969 to 1974 as a P3 pilot.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1974, Dave earned an MBA degree from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. From there he joined the exciting and booming tech industry, working in sales for Hewlett Packard until his retirement in 1997.
Even during the 90’s, it was hard for him to unplug from his devices. So, in 1996 his wife plotted and planned a trip to New Zealand. Surely being half-way around the world would keep him unplugged and it did! For two weeks they hiked and explored the wonderful sights of the South Island in addition to Dave bungee jumping for the first time.
After a brief retirement from HP and cross-country motorcycle trip Dave decided he still wasn’t ready for retirement so he went to work for the technology consulting firm Gartner Inc. and had a wonderful experience and fulfilling second career.
He attempted to retire again but the workaholic had a dream that he needed to achieve which was to have his own business. He went back to school to become a residential and commercial home and property inspector. With Dave's kindness, attention to detail, impeccable work ethic, and desire to always be of service, his business thrived for the past six years.
Over the years Dave cherished the many lifelong friendships from: Ina Grade School, Mt. Vernon Township High School, Murray State, Sigma Chi, The U.S. Navy, Hewlett Packard, Gartner, Atlantic Coast Inspections and all the others whose lives he touched along the way.
He is survived by his second wife of 40 years and great love, Bonnie Settle, and her son Omar Jerald Evans III.
Dave is survived by his first wife, Cary Veve, with whom they had one daughter, Kathleen Settle-LaDonna, in June of 1977. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Timothy LaDonna, and their one son, Tristan David LaDonna, born in November 2011.
He is survived by his brother, Lloyd Settle and sister-in-law JoAnn (Clayton) Settle, parents of Sheila Fowler and Emily DeVore.
Dave was an incredibly hard-working individual and will forever be remembered for his love of family and friends, kindness, loyalty, work ethic, and love of animals. His immediate family and friends will remember a man who could be hilarious because of his childlike silliness or wonderful sarcasm. A man who was borderline obsessed with the show, MASH, which he watched for many, many years after the show went off the air. A man who adored his pets like his own children. A man who would give the shirt off his back if you asked. He will be dearly missed.
