William (Bill) P. Gilbert, 84, of Effingham, IL died Monday, January 24, 2022 at Stonebridge Senior Living in Benton, IL.
He was born on December 4, 1937 in Mt. Vernon, IL, the son of William A. and Lucille Gilbert. He married Joyce Emily Holman on May 19, 1957 in Mt. Vernon.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce, four children: Russell and Sally (Winn) Gilbert of St. Elmo, IL; Doug and Vickie Munton of O’Fallon, IL; Dave and Terri (Stephens) Gilbert of Effingham, IL; John and Lisa Loy of Effingham, IL; twelve grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janice Renee, his parents, and four siblings-Nadine Jenkins, Dueene Shields, Robert E. Gilbert and Catheline Gibbs.
William was employed for many years at General Radiator in Mt. Vernon before moving to Effingham where he worked as a machinist with Southern Illinois Machinery. Later in life he opened his own machine shop, Effingham Machine and Tool.
Mr. Gilbert served in the Army from 1957 to 1959, then spent three years in the Reserves and was Honorably Discharged on January 31, 1963. During Mr. Gilbert’s time in the service he was with the 101st Airborne.
There will be a Visitation from 1 to 2 P. M. Saturday, January 29th at the Johnston Funeral Home in Ina for Family and close friends only. Military Rites will be conducted and burial will be in the Williams Chapel Cemetery in Ewing.
